No More Cosmetic Castration for Ladyboys

BANGKOK (Reuters) – Hospitals and clinics in Thailand were barred from performing “cosmetic castration” on would-be “ladyboys” without the rigorous evaluation required for a sex change operation.

The Public Health Ministry said doctors performing this quick operation would face up to six months in jail. It will be difficult to enforce this ban since it takes only 15-20 minutes to have the surgery, which can be done anywhere.

“Thailand is home to a large number of “ladyboys,” or “katoey” in Thai, a term that covers anything from a transvestite to a man who has undergone a full sex change,” reports Reuters. In response to the demand from teenage boys to look more like girls, internet ads offer castration for as low as 4,000 baht ($125).
